Holochain is the technology Flowsta is built on. Instead of one giant shared ledger like a blockchain, every user has their own personal chain. Apps run as peer-to-peer networks where data is shared between users directly, with no central server in the middle. It's how we can offer sovereign identity, free verification, and per-user storage at scale — without gas fees, mining, or token speculation.

Holochain matches what we wanted to build: agent-centric (you own your chain, not a slice of someone else's), per-action cost effectively zero (no gas), and naturally distributed (no central database to breach). Sovereign identity, file signing, and an open ecosystem are all easier to build well on Holochain than on a blockchain or a traditional cloud database.

Blockchain has one global ledger that every node must agree on — slow, expensive, and limited. Holochain has one chain per user, with apps validating data peer-to-peer. There's no global consensus, no mining, no gas fees, no token. Holochain is also a public, open-source project (not a Flowsta technology), which means apps built on it survive even if Flowsta itself disappears.

No. Holochain has no token, no coin, no cryptocurrency. There's nothing to buy, mine, or speculate on. Apps run with effectively zero per-action cost because each user has their own chain and validation is peer-to-peer. This is one of the biggest practical differences from blockchain: you don't need to acquire a token to use Flowsta.

Yes. Creating a Flowsta Identity, signing in to partner sites, downloading Vault, and verifying signed files are all completely free — and always will be. Yes — security is the foundation, not an afterthought. Your password is verified using zero-knowledge cryptography (we never see it). Your data is encrypted with keys derived from your password, on a distributed network with no central database to breach. Signing uses Ed25519 — the same scheme as SSH and Signal. With Vault, your private keys never leave your computer.

With one Flowsta account, you can sign in to all partner websites, sign your files with Sign It, and use any third-party app that supports Flowsta — without creating separate accounts or managing multiple passwords. You own your identity, your data stays private, and nobody can take your account away.

When you create your account, you generate a 24-word recovery phrase — like a master key. Save it securely. If you forget your password, you can recover your account using this phrase. Nobody else can reset your password for you — that's part of true ownership.

Flowsta Vault is a free desktop app for Linux, macOS and Windows. It runs a local Holochain conductor on your machine, lets you sign files with Sign It, hosts third-party Holochain apps, and provides offline desktop logins. Your private keys never leave your computer.
